Traveling During COVID-19
As certain states and countries start to reopen more of their places, the question of travel is all around. People are wondering if it’s safe to travel, what precautions need to be taken, and what restrictions exist. Flights are cheaper than they have been in a long time, which makes travel appealing to many, but traveling during COVID-19 is a complicated topic.
There are a lot of things to consider if you’re planning to travel, especially if air travel would be involved in your plans. You need to consider the restrictions of where you’re traveling to, the risks you may be putting on yourself or others, and the potential of getting your flight cancelled or rescheduled.
Traveling during COVID-19 is anything but normal. However, if you do choose to travel, it’s best to be informed. Here’s what you need to know about traveling during COVID-19.
Is it safe to travel? This in itself is a complicated question. Traveling comes with its potential risks, even before COVID-19 was widespread. Any time you come in close contact with others, there is the potential to spread the virus if you are a carrier or to contract the virus from someone who is a carrier. Typically, airports and other travel hubs have larger concentrations of people.
TSA has issued new guidelines for those traveling by air. Most airports are requiring passengers to wear masks inside the airport. However, passengers will be asked to remove their mask when going through security in order to establish identity. In addition to this procedure, travelers may be asked to scan their own IDs or passports to prevent TSA agents from touching them. Travelers may also be asked to load their carry on items differently so TSA agents don’t have to touch them. Many precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of TSA agents and travelers by reducing contact.
Airlines are also spacing people out when possible. Many flights have been relatively empty, so airlines will space passengers out on these flights when they’re able to. However, some flights are still full and social distancing on these flights is not possible.
If you must travel during the pandemic, you can take precautions by wearing a mask, bringing hand sanitizer, and making sure not to touch your face. Stay as far away from other people as you can, and ensure your mask is tightly secured. Since you will have a mask on, it’s best to refrain from drinking or eating at the airport or on the flight. Drinking and eating before entering the airport can be a simple precaution to take. Traveling during COVID-19 is something that only you can decide. There are risks of traveling to both yourself and potentially others, but you can take measures to keep yourself safe if you do choose to travel.
