Effective Mask to Prevent COVID

The use of face masks has become increasingly common and even required in many parts of the United States since the outbreak of COVID-19. Many states and cities require people to wear masks if they’re leaving their house because the virus, known as the coronavirus, can spread through close contact. Many people who have the virus may not even show symptoms, yet still be contagious.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, face masks play a critical role. However, not all face masks are created equal. When looking for an effective face mask to prevent COVID-19, you’ll want to consider these four things: fabric, filter, fit, and durability.

Fabric

The fabric used for your face mask matters because a tightly woven fabric will help to block the respiratory droplets that spread the disease. Droplet spread is how coronavirus spreads, so masks serve as a protective layer to essentially catch these droplets. You’ll want a multi-layered and tightly woven fabric to serve as an effective protective layer.

Filter

Masks with the right filters can be more effective because a high-quality filter adds another layer of protection to the mask to prevent moist droplets from entering your airways and mouth. The CDC has recommended using coffee filters to homemade masks. According to some research done by The Missouri S&T, coffee filters used in multiple layers removed around 24% of relevant particles.

Fit

The fit of a face mask is one of the most important things, and unfortunately, it’s a feature that people are commonly lacking. The mask needs to have a snug fit all around your face since it is basically useless if there are gaps. Gaps in a face mask allow the spread of virus droplets to enter your nose or mouth, which can infect you with the virus. You want to make sure the mask you are wearing allows you to breathe, fits snugly, and doesn’t require a lot of adjusting. It’s important not to frequently touch your face mask to adjust it, since touching your face mask could spread the virus to your hands. If you must touch your face mask, use hand sanitizer after.

Durability

Face masks should ideally be washed after every use in hot soapy water to cleanse the face mask of any virus particles it may have picked up. It’s important to have a durable mask so that when you wash it, it doesn’t lose its shape or get damaged.
